Oriya..mmmmm…Udia..mmmmm…Oudia…

Today…I read a great post from a South Indian…….a must read…

Travails Of Single South Indian Man

Now this inspired me to write something on the Oriyas or we can say Bengalis. As my father is working in Indian Air Force I have been to different places in India.

Talking about the names, my name is Pabitra Mohan………

Only true Oriyas and Bengalis can pronounce my name correctly. Its actually “Pavitra” (means pure) if some northie want to pronounce my name correctly. As this looks an unusual name, people used to say what kind of name is it?…So they started calling me by some different name, Pabitaraaa(Nashik Name), Pabii, Paintraaa, Papihaa or Papihee (My famous name in Chandigarh ;-) )…..and now Pabbu…..here in Hyderabad.

Used to hate when my name was to be announced in a crowd, like some prize disribution etc….., no one used to pronounce coorectly as I wanted…..still remember…worst name announced was Pratibha Mohan (errrr..wanted to kill that person)…..all were searching for a female….

Funny side is my family name also, my dads name: ‘Subash Chandra Behera’(this title is common in Orissa), now what Behera means in Hindi everyone knows. When I was doing Pre schooling (L.KG) I was named by my parents “Pabitra Kumar Behera”, even the teachers used to tease me…I used to cry everyday to change my name and was finally named “Pabitra Mohan”, the intention was to name me Pavitra Mohan, but by naming me Pabitra Mohan he did the correct thing, as my parents are also Oriya.

The problem…. actually not a problem as different languages have different rules and pronounciations. There is no ‘v’ in Oriya. So Vinod will be named Binod, Vikram is Bikram, Varun is Barun………

So an Oriya or Bengali can be recognised easily by their names.

Another thing is pronouncing ‘SH’, for eg..’Shalgam’ will be called ’Salgam’, ‘Shock’=sock, shopping=sopping.

Had lot of problem in my school days when pronouncing ‘SH’, and my friends never left a chance to tease me and give a tuition on this and laughing on me.

Hope u all understood what I wanted to say.

But this is what differentiate an Oriya and some pure Hindi soul. All languages have different pronounciations.

An Oriya in between a bunch of Northies will face the same problem, when a Nothie is in between a bunch of Oriyas.

Having spent 4 yrs in Orissa while doing my engineering is when I learnt Oriya correctly including all the slangs. ;-)

Even am still learning…….my roommate say its not Oriyaa, its Oudiaaa…mmmm..Audiaa…..mmmm……Udia..whatever….he will teach me again…
